Celebrate History Week 2021, by delving deeper into 'Women of Steel'!
Decently-paid jobs for women were scarce in Wollongong in the early 1980s.
This inspiring documentary, narrated by filmmaker Robynne Murphy (herself a prominent campaigner, later a career steelworker) tells how a small but determined group of women, many of them migrant women, took on AIS and beat them - twice!
When an initial anti-discrimination case succeeded, AIS hired many women who then, as the 'last hired', lost their jobs when the 1982 steel industry slump hit. A further case, resolved in their favour by the High Court in 1989 after numerous AIS appeals, set a landmark in anti-discrimination law.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A discussion session with the filmmaker and other original Jobs for Women campaigners.
This is a free and online event.
This event is a part of History Week 2021 #fromthegroundup, organised by the History Council NSW.
Hosted by Sydney Branch, Australian Society for the Study of Labour History (ASSLH).
