The Sydney International Piano Competition (The Sydney) is holding a digital competition in 2021, with 32 competitors from 14 countries vying for top honours in the world-renowned competition running from 1 to 18 July.
The list of pianists for the 2021 Competition includes 8 from Russia, 6 from China, 3 from Ukraine, Japan and Australia, two from South Korea and Canada, and one competitor each from Uzbekistan, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, Italy and Hungary. The competitors range in age from 18 to 32.
The competition will consist of three stages - preliminary, semi-final and final - comprising of 28 competitive rounds, along with a Gala Opening Night concert on 1st July. The 28 online sessions will be available for audiences worldwide to view in their own homes, on-demand and broadcast over three weeks.
The decision was made to hold the competition virtually in order to be able to continue to support and offer opportunities to competitors during these difficult times for musicians worldwide. The Sydney, which generally takes place every four years, will offer its competitors $164,000 in cash prizes, international concert engagements, CD recordings and career mentoring, making it one of the world's leading competitions of its kind.
