Ella was born in Poland in 1935, and was an only child who lived a comfortable childhood.
In 1940, Ella's father escaped to Russia before Ella and her mother moved into the Mlawa Ghetto. Ella and her mother escaped and survived by hiding in a Catholic convent and a farm in a remote village.
