Susan was born in 1937 in Vienna, Austria. In 1938, her family tried to escape to Switzerland, but were turned back.

In 1939, Susan's father was taken to Buchenwald, where he was murdered. In 1942, Susan's mother smuggled her out to Hungary, forced to leave Susan's brother behind. In Hungary, Susan and her mother went into hiding with false papers in a remote village.

Susan recalls the antisemitism that existed even after the war was over. in 1947, Susan and her mother migrated to Australia. Only decades later, Susan discovered the fate of her brother.
