Intrigued by a pair of hand-knitted socks in the City of Sydney's civic collection, curator Margaret Betteridge found a Red Cross pattern that inspired Australians to knit for victory during World War I.

Their efforts produced an estimated 1.3 million pairs, sent to Europe as comforts against the painful trench foot.

Margaret will share some personal stories of the significance these socks had for people, including her own grandparents.

Margaret Betteridge is the curator of the City of Sydney's civic collection. She enjoys sharing special stories about Sydney through some of the City of Sydney's fascinating and intriguing objects and archives.
