John Brack's art imposes order on the everyday, with an austere classicism that urges us to look at the Australian experience anew. His paintings and drawings of individuals, suburban life and carefully arranged inanimate objects were unique in modern Australian art. Seemingly rendered with a cool detachment, they are both intimate and universal, and among the great works of late 20th-century Australian art. This focus exhibition is drawn from the Gallery's outstanding collection of Brack's paintings, prints and drawings from across his career of this major postwar Australian modernist, including recent acquisitions.
